SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES AS AN ELEMENT OF MODERNISATION OF THE ECONOMY

Summary

The modernisation theory, which derives from sociology and is understood as a theory of social progress and change, is defined as a process of changes which contribute to the development of a modern industrial society. The process of modernisation of the economy may take various forms using a variety of tools available to the state to exert an impact on the economy, Special Economic Zones being one of them. Those zones, popular in many countries, are considered an efficient tool of the state’s impact used to promote and modernise the economy. The SEZs established in Poland were to serve certain social and economic goals thus contributing to various changes in the economy of both quantitative and qualitative nature. The study aims to present the reasons for establishing SEZs in Poland, discuss the stages and methods of their implementation, as well as opportunities for their future development.
